What is Supplemental Health Insurance?

Comprehensive health plans provide a full range of medical services. But it may not offer some features that you want. For example, most comprehensive health plans don’t provide adult dental and vision care. You must purchase a stand-alone policy, or a rider that accompanies a comprehensive plan. You may be between enrollment periods, so getting a comprehensive health plan is not accessible. Finally, a comprehensive health plan may be too expensive.

To be specific about some situations:

You may not be satisfied with the home health care benefit on your comprehensive plan. You purchase a separate home health policy to supplement your existing plan.

You don’t qualify for a special enrollment period. Special enrollment periods are also called Qualifying Life Events. Short term medical insurance can bridge having no coverage and getting into a comprehensive plan.

A comprehensive plan is not affordable, or you don’t think you need one. You opt for accident insurance or a limited medical plan.
